The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, constructed between 1858 and 1881, is the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in North America, and is purportedly the second largest in the world, next to the Kremlin. This West Virginia facility served as a sanctuary for the mentally ill beginning in the mid 1800’s. The best time to visit is October, celebrate everything Halloween with the haunted house, zombie paintball, Fall Fest, flashlight tours, ghost hunts, Asylum Ball and paranormal tours.
